Parenting surprise
Periodically parents come to my office telling me that their child is out of control at home and the parents are totally frustrated by the child's behavior. They also explain that their child isn't out of control at school, in the community or at their grandparents. I will then tell the parents that I KNOW THE SOURCE of the problem. They are anxious to hear my insight. I tell them that THEY ARE THE PROBLEM. I am surprised that they take this pronouncement without anger or frustration. I tell them that we can quickly and easily change the household rules to put the parents in charge. Once this is done the household will run smoothly and comfortably for everyone.
